Charlotte e Ian sono fratello e sorella. Da bambini erano soliti giocare a Burken, una versione di nascondino un po’ particolare  in cui esiste una preda, lei, e un cacciatore, lui.

La chiamata di Burken è improvvisa. Tre round di corse folli e di finte lotte, dieci secondi di tempo di vantaggio e un finale sempre uguale: il cacciatore che acchiappa la preda.

“That monster’s gonna getcha if you don’t run NOW!”

Però i bambini ad un certo punto crescono e si ritrovano ad affrontare la realtà, una vita in cui Burken non esiste più. Dapprima la fuga improvvisa della madre che abbandona senza alcuna spiegazione i figli adolescenti e il marito. Poi il padre che finisce in galera.

Ian e Charlotte restano quindi soli.

Si ritrovano a crescere e sopravvivere senza alcun appoggio se non se stessi. I sacrifici sono all’ordine del giorno, le amicizie vanno perse e i sogni infranti.

E se invece fosse arrivato il tempo di una ultimissima partita a Burken? Se le regole fossero cambiate? Chi sarebbe ora il mostro ad arrivare? E prima ancora chi era invece?

Un thriller che nasconde più di quanto possiate immaginare. Una trama intrigante e adrenalina in pillole per un libro diverso dagli altri.
